Remember how the Internet used to be? Very few or no ads, pages that
were easy to read and loaded quickly (even with standard phone
dial-up). Today, many sites are brimming with pop-up ads, which hugely
slow page-loading and make the real content (text and images) difficult
to read.
You can somewhat address these annoyances by paying for
commercially-available pop-up and ad-blockers. But with a little bit of
effort, you can save your money, create a vastly more-effective
solution, and learn a little bit about how "adware" works. |

This blog site demonstrates how doctors use Google.
Some highlights:
Clinical Images: Google Image Search is helps in locating useful diagrams and condition
pictures. Images from not-so-typical cases can be immedaitely found helping with diagnosis
and treatment.
Scholar Search: uses the same page-rank algorithm used by Google to weigh the significance
of a particular article. "The problem with the Scholar is that it lags behind PubMed in updates."
Use Medical Terms in the Search Query: "Using 'differential' or other medical terms to sort
out the commercial websites is very useful. The other option is to go by the source, like 'search
term' + 'NEJM', "AFP", 'Merck manual', 'eMedicine', etc. Google aslo offers personalized search
that you can use to shift the slider to 'Max' to leave the commercial websites out.

Tips of the day:
Content, content content! There's no easy way around getting high SERPs (which are way more important that PR).
What's the best strategy for adding content? Here are some ideas:
Once you start, keep adding content to your web site on a regular
basis. If you have a page full of content ready to be added, add it
one-paragraph-a-week instead of all at once. If you have 100 pages, add
one page every few days (and keep writing more because you will need
more when you run out!). This tells Google that you're updating
frequently, and that's a good thing. You may even offer selected
excerpts from articles, term papers or books you've written. This is
good way to build content without a lot of work.
